## Visa Requirements & Eligibility

Applying for a US Visa requires careful preparation of specific documents. The requirements vary depending on whether you are applying for a nonimmigrant visa \(like a B1/B2 tourist visa\) or an immigrant visa, as well as if you qualify for the Visa Waiver Program \(ESTA\).

  * **Documentation:** You will need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay, a recent passport-style photograph meeting specific Department of State criteria, and a completed DS-160 confirmation page.
  * **Eligibility:** Applicants must demonstrate strong ties to their home country and prove they have the financial means to cover their trip.
  * **Processing Timelines:** ESTA approvals are typically issued within 72 hours. Standard B1/B2 visa processing times depend heavily on embassy interview wait times, which can range from a few weeks to several months.
  * **Fees:** The ESTA application fee is currently $21 USD. The standard nonimmigrant visitor visa \(DS-160\) fee is $185 USD. All fees are non-refundable.

## Common Scams & How to Protect Yourself

Because the US visa process is highly sought after, it is a major target for sophisticated scams. Being able to identify these frauds is critical to protecting your personal information and your money.

  * **Fake Agents & "Guaranteed" Approvals:** Scammers often claim they have insider access to the embassy and can guarantee visa approval for a high fee. _Protection:_ The US government does not work with third-party agents to expedite or guarantee visas. Only consular officers can make visa decisions.
  * **Overpayment Schemes \(ESTA Fraud\):** Many unofficial websites mimic the ESTA application page and charge $100+ for a service that officially costs $21. _Protection:_ Only apply for ESTA via the official Department of Homeland Security website \(esta.cbp.dhs.gov\).
  * **Document Forgery:** Fraudulent "consultants" may offer to create fake bank statements or employment letters. _Protection:_ Presenting forged documents will result in a permanent ban from entering the United States. Always submit genuine, verifiable documents.

## Password Reset & Account Security

When accessing the CEAC portal or scheduling your visa interview, you will need to create secure accounts. Protecting these accounts is vital, as they contain your highly sensitive biometric and passport data.

  * **Password Recovery:** If you forget your CEAC or CGI Federal password, use the official "Forgot Password" link on the login screen. You will need access to the email address you originally registered with, and you may be asked to answer security questions.
  * **Creating Strong Passwords:** Use a unique password that you do not use on any other website. It should be at least 12 characters long, combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
