## Visa Requirements & Eligibility

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada \(IRCC\) handles all visa and immigration processing. Depending on your passport and the purpose of your travel, you will either need an Electronic Travel Authorization \(eTA\) or a Temporary Resident Visa \(Visitor Visa\).

  * **Documentation:** Required documents generally include a valid passport, proof of funds to support your stay, a letter of invitation \(if applicable\), and completed IRCC application forms. You may also need to provide biometrics \(fingerprints and a photo\).
  * **Eligibility:** You must satisfy an immigration officer that you have strong ties to your home country \(job, home, financial assets\) and that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit.
  * **Processing Timelines:** eTA applications are usually approved within minutes. Visitor Visa processing times vary by the country from which you are applying and can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
  * **Fees:** An eTA costs $7 CAD. The standard visitor visa application fee is $100 CAD, plus an additional $85 CAD if you are required to submit biometrics.

## Common Scams & How to Protect Yourself

Canada is a highly desirable destination, which unfortunately makes visa applicants a frequent target for immigration fraud. It is essential to be aware of the common tactics used by scammers.

  * **Fake eTA Websites:** Dozens of websites mimic the official eTA application and charge $50 to $100 CAD for a service that officially costs $7 CAD. _Protection:_ Only apply for an eTA on the official **Canada.ca** website.
  * **Guaranteed Visas & Jobs:** Unregistered immigration consultants may contact you claiming they can guarantee you a visa, permanent residency, or a high-paying job in Canada. _Protection:_ No one can guarantee a visa approval. Only IRCC officers make these decisions. Legitimate employers will not ask you for money to secure a job.
  * **IRCC Impersonation Calls:** Scammers may call you pretending to be from IRCC, threatening you with deportation or arrest if you do not pay a "fine" immediately via gift cards or crypto. _Protection:_ IRCC will never call to collect money or threaten you. Hang up and report the call.

## Password Reset & Account Security

To apply for most Canadian visas online, you must create a secure IRCC account using either a GCKey or a Sign-In Partner \(Canadian banking credentials\). Keeping this account secure is vital.

  * **Password Recovery \(GCKey\):** If you forget your GCKey password, click "Forgot your password?" on the login page. You will need to answer the recovery questions you set up when you created the account. If you forget your username or recovery answers, you must create a new GCKey and link your existing application to the new account.
  * **Creating Strong Passwords:** Choose a long, complex password. Avoid using dictionary words, your name, or your date of birth.
  * **Account Security Best Practices:** Do not share your GCKey credentials with friends or unauthorized consultants. Ensure you always log out of your IRCC account when you are finished, especially on public devices.
